Group Presentation
The purpose of this presentation will be to introduce students to the cultural, social, economic, and political richness and diversity of each region. Presentations shall include the primary physical and social characteristics of each region. Specifically, the presentations will address the following:
- Geographic characteristics: topography, major land-forms, climate, vegetation, and how these factors impact the way people live, make a living, and view the world.
- Socio- cultural characteristics: where people live (race, ethnicity, gender, class); language, religion, expressive culture (examples of art music, traditions).
- Economic Characteristics: role of agriculture (and land ownership), industry, mining; disparities in wealth and poverty.
- Political Characteristics: map with names of countries within region; types of government.

CIA World Factbook - A website of the United States Central Intelligence Agency that provides in depth information on countries around the world including information on geography, people and society, government, economy and more.
Films on Demand - A database of films on varying topics. This database might be more useful that YouTube as it provides commentary and written descriptions of each segment of film.
Credo Reference - A database that searches thousands of reference books. Be very specific in searching here, otherwise you will get too many results that are off topic.
Research Paper
Students will choose ONE of the six services articulated in the PEPFAR Program (Presidents Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief) Guidance for Orphans and Vulnerable Children:
- health care
- food and nutrition support
- education
- shelter
- psycho-social support
- legal protection
For the chosen topic they will discuss the following:
- What is the definition and scope of the issue?
- Why is it important to the overall well-being of vulnerable children?
- What are the evidence-based best practices that can make a difference for children?
- What are the human rights issues related to this service, taking into account the four core principles articulated in the Convention on the Rights of the Child?
- What next steps, recommendations, or arguments would you make?
