Resources on Facebook

Social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, YouTube, and flickr usually provide a break from your studies.  Here is a guide to help you combine that break time with some project/assignment resources.

FACEBOOK

Facebook has so many aps, here are a few that you can use or add to your facebook profile that can help you with various assignments.

To find these applications, click on the “Applications” link on the bottom left-hand corner of the home page.  Click the “Find More” link in the upper right-hand corner of the pop-up box.   Use the application search bar on the right side of the screen.  Type in the name of the application as its shown below.  Click on the application title, and then click “Go to Application.”  Click “Allow.”  Applications that you “allow” will not automatically show up on your profile.  If you want to add the application to your profile, click on the link “add to profile.”

ArtShare

Search for art work housed in museums from around the world, or upload and share your own work.  Search images by participating museum, or browse the works of facebook contributors.  If you use images from this resource for a project, make sure to cite the work at the end of your paper or presentation.

By OCLC

This citation creation application allows you to search for materials by author, title, subject or ISBN.  The application automatically creates a citation that you can use in bibliographies for research papers or projects.  Try searching by author if a title search does not retrieve the correct resource.  The default display is a citation in APA format.  Click on the different tabs to get the citation in the format preferred by your professor.  Tip:  Look at the bottom of the page for a link to a YouTube video on how to build a bibliography.

Financial Times Free Student Subscription Offer

This is a $109.00 resource available free through this application.  You must be a student to use this resource.  After you click through the links to this application, you must fill out a registration form.  Then check out the website or wait for your e-newsletter to arrive.

Jobster Career Network

This is a great resource to start your job search.  You can also build your portfolio and demonstrate your technology skills by creating an online resume through this application.

Power Polls

Need to take a survey for a class?  Use this application to generate a survey.  Facebook friends, everyone, or just people in your network can participate in the survey.  Tips:  Use the “Click” link by the continue button for a tutorial.  When entering the number of choices do not write out the number, type it in numerical form (i.e. use “2” for a two choice survey).

By OCLC

This is an online catalog that searches library collections across the world; including Cabrini Holy Spirit Library’s collection!  Search by title, author, format (i.e. search just for DVDs), or browse through the “Something to Read” tab to find a book to check out and borrow instead of purchasing.  If you want to borrow something from another library, check with Cabrini Librarians to find out how to access other local academic libraries.
