I looked into three totally different paintings, and I researched all three, but I am going to research the painting Prometheus Bound by Peter Paul Rubens. I love his technique, his use of color, light, and line. I love his subjects that he decided to paint and the emotions he evokes from me are inspiring, mainlying because I am a oil painter myself. The other two paintings I researched were paintings that I have known about from earlier art classes. Peter Paul Rubens, is the artist that I am interested in studying, mainly the Prometheus Bound painting.
These are my thre researched works of art below: Karly Brennan
"Prometheus Bound", the author is Peter Paul Rubens. This painting is an oil on canvas and is dipicting Prometheus having his liver eaten out by an eagle. The theme behind this painting is the story of Prometheus, the God who was chained to a mountain top and was to have his liver eatten every night by an eagle, and then it would regrow only to be eatten again the next night. Prometheus was tortured because he was instructed by Zeus to guard the fire and not give it to the morals, but he did and was sentenced to an eternity of pain and agony. The painting is 95 1/2 x 82 1/2 inches and is displayed in the Philadelphia Mueseum of Art. Rubens started this painting in the south netherlands in 1611 and it was completed by 1612.
This painting is known as "The Birth of Venus" by Sandro Botticelli. It was started in 1482 and was completed around 1486. It depicts the godess Venus emerging from the ocean as a grown woman on a sea shell. It is unknown who the patron of this art work was, mainly because there was no patron name documented, but it was thought to have a few connections, but the basis behind this painting is thought to be the celebration of love. Venus is depicted as the ideal woman, but she isnt porportional to the known female anatomy. During the time of the Renaissance woman were dipicted as voluptuous and that was ideal for paintings and art work during that time period.
"The Pastoral Concert" was originially thought be the art work of Gorgione, but recently has been thought to be the work of Titian in his early years. Titian, also known as Tiziano Vecellio was responsible for some amazing paintings during the Renaissance. It was completed around 1510, the start date is unknown. It is believed that Gorgione started the painting and Titian completed it after Gorgione's death. It depicts two nude women in a pasture; one pouring water from a pitcher and one playing the flute. It is thought that this painting is meant to symbolize a form of poetry. It is a concert and a story between two women that is to be determined by the viewer. The artist is known for his use of close-valued colors to create a "hazy" light or a mist. It was also part of the trend that started in Venice that dealt with the invisible verses the visible. Again, the women were depicted voluptuous and nude because that was considered the ideal beauty at the time.
