Google vs Library Databases

Page history last edited by as 12 years, 1 month ago

There are many reasons to use library databases rather than Google when conducting research:

  • You are more likely to find academic or scholarly sources.
  • You are more likely to find pertinent analysis and criticism.
  • Many of the sources are available in full text.
  • There is not a charge to download full text content.
  • The databases show you how to cite the articles in different citation styles e.g. APA, MLA, Chicago.
  • The articles you find in library databases are much more likely to come from credible sources.
  • Your search information is not tracked
  • Your search information is not compiled.
  • Your search information does not become a part of a digital dossier.

Searching library databases is very different than searching Google.

  • Your search terms need to be adjusted accordingly.  The following MS Powerpoint tutorial shows you the difference and provides hints for using the library databases Google vs Databases.ppt

Getting started on library databases.

  • Databases are available from the library's database page. You can either use the box on the left to look for databases by subject or browse through all of them alphabetically.  The following tutorial demonstrates how to access library databases.

Using webpages.

  • If you decide to use webpages for your research, remember that you must judge them more critically than sources you find in the library.
  • If you want to use search engines that do not track you try:  DuckDuckGo. You might also want to try Bing, or Wolfram Alpha.
  • If you are a google user, you can maximize your searching by using the Advanced search feature.  To find the advanced search feature, complete a search then scroll to the bottom of the results page.  Select Advanced search from the bottom of the results page.
