Effective Communication
1. Written Communication
Possible Indicators for establishing whether the student has met the learning outcome
a. Student articulates a focus and develops it throughout an essay.
b. Student uses appropriate conventions for the intended audience throughout an essay.
c. Student synthesizes evidence from sources to support the thesis statement or proposition.
d. Student organizes an essay in such a way that the logic of the structure is evident.
e. Student expresses his or her opinions in an appropriate rhetorical style.
2. Mediated Communication
Possible Indicators for establishing whether the student has met the learning outcome
a. Student utilizes mediated communication in order to reach the intended audience.
b. Student demonstrates a facility in the use of electronic or digital communication tools.
c. Student uses products of the creative arts.
d. Student selects the appropriate communication tool to best deliver a message.
e. Student uses the appropriate conventions when communicating with professional or social audiences.
f. Student analyzes mediated messages as a critical media consumer.
3. Oral Presentation Skills
Possible Indicators for establishing whether the student has met the learning outcome
a. Student delivers an appropriate message.
i. Student researches audience members’ backgrounds and interests.
ii. Student uses appropriate conventions for the intended audience (e.g. pronunciation, grammar and physical behaviors).
b. Student delivers message effectively.
i. Student adjusts his or her volume, pitch and rate of speech.
ii. Student effectively employs presentation aids (e.g. photographs, diagrams, models, etc.) to enhance audience understanding of the topic.
iii. Student can introduce a topic and conclude a presentation or conversation.
iv. Student uses transitions between significant points in order to increase the listener’s understanding.
v. Student is perceived by audience as being informed and credible.
4. Interpersonal Communication
Possible Indicators for establishing whether the student has met the learning outcome
a. The student can clearly explain his/her own ideas.
b. The student can express his/her feelings and opinions in an open and non-threatening manner.
c. The student is attentive when others are speaking.
d. The student asks pertinent questions when s/he does not understand what is being said and/or to clarify the feelings and ideas of others.
e. The student is sensitive and responsive to nonverbal behaviors in others.
5. Small Group Communication Skills
Possible Indicators for establishing whether the student has met the learning outcome
a. The student is receptive to new ideas and diverse viewpoints.
b. The student accepts responsibility for group tasks and is accountable for their completion.
c. The student works collaboratively with and supports the efforts of other group member, using appropriate information-sharing tools.
d. The student is able to provide constructive feedback to others and accepts feedback non-defensively.
e. The student assists in the facilitation of group goal setting and decision-making.
