1.     Analytic Reasoning and Critical Thinking

 

Possible Indicators for establishing whether the student has met the learning outcome

 

a.        Student gathers and assesses relevant information to understand and evaluate a position besides his or her own.

 

b.        Student clearly and precisely formulates questions about his or her own or another’s position.

 

c.        Student understands the underlying assumptions behind his or her own or another’s position.

 

d.        Student contextualizes a position historically and culturally.

 

e.        Student tests his or her own or another’s conclusions against relevant criteria and standards.

 

f.         Student understands the implications and consequences of his or her own or another’s position.

 

2.       Creative Thinking

a.        Student suspends judgment.

 

b.        Student considers alternative explanations.

 

c.        Student demonstrates originality.

 

d.        Student uses imagination to solve problems.

 

3.       Scientific Reasoning

a.        Student understands and utilizes the scientific method.

                                                                         iv.            Student collects and analyzes experimental data.

b.        Student evaluates claims made by the scientific/technology community.

 

c.        Student understands science and technology in light of ethical and cultural concerns.

 

d.        Student demonstrates basic scientific and technological literacy sufficient to understanding real-world problems.

 

4.       Quantitative Reasoning

a.        Student constructs, interprets, and utilizes linear models to predict trends.

 

b.        Student understands basic spatial relations and geometric principles.

 

c.        Student understands basic principles of probability and statistics.

 

d.        Student understands the use and applications of sets to sort and compare data.

 

e.        Student can develop, analyze, and make inferences based on quantitative data expressed in charts and graphs.

 

f.         Student can use mathematics to understand basic principles of finance and to solve other real-world problems.

 

g.        Student uses commonly available tools for structuring and analyzing numerical data.
